I had the pleasure of attending the Dorset Best Kept and Community Village awards ceremony at Pimperne on 24th September, it was a wonderful evening well attended by villages from all over Dorset.
I am really pleased to advise you that Leigh won two awards:Calor Village of the Year Dorset Best Community Village Category 1 Winner – People and a cheque for £75 andCalor Village of the Year Dorset Best Community Village Runner Up
and a cheque for £150
We have two framed certificates which I am sure can be displayed in Our New Hall. It would appear that we were pipped at the post by Halstock, I believe that their community shop was a key element to them winning.
Well done to everybody involved in this competition, particular thanks go to Phil Burton for collating our application document and organising the day of the judging.
Thanks to you all involved it a great accolade to a great village.

LEIGH OPEN GARDENS – June 2009
Blessed with glorious weather, a record number of visitors descended on the nine gardens which opened for charity on June 14th. There was even a coach load of gardening enthusiasts from Ringwood on the Hampshire border which chose to visit us.
This year’s chosen charity was Weldmar Hospicecare based in Dorchseter and the wonderful sum of £1050 was raised for this excellent cause – an unprecedented amount.
The gardens which opened were:
“Bridgend”, Chetnole Road - Carol & Steve Porter
“Milck House”, Back Drove - Chris & Tom Withycombe
“Leigh Farm”, Chetnole Road - Robert Edwards - Teas were served here
“Rose Cottage, South Street - Bill Bennette
“Leigh Cote”, Chetnole Road - Chris & Eric Ovenden
“Long Barn”, Yetminster Road - Judy & John Tuke
“Meadowcroft”, Miz Maze - Sandy & Phil Burton
“Brook House”, Batcombe Road - Sylvia & Philip Bryan
“Deepwell Cottage”, Three Gates - Morag & Paul Orchard
This annual event alternates between Leigh and Chetnole and is organised by the Chetnole & Leigh Garden Club with volunteers from the “non open” village preparing and serving the afternoon teas at one of the gardens in the “open” village.
Many thanks to all who participated, helped and visited.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT
The community of Leigh Rallyed together when it was feared that Longbridge and Bolters Droves would be turned into stoney tracks.
These Droves are historic green lanes which are a haven for flora and fauna and it was felt that this would be destroyed if this were to happen.
