This year’s Candle Auction will, as usual, be held in Leigh Village Hall on the 19 June, with the auctions for Alton and Beer/Bere Mill Meads starting at 7pm. It is, of course, impossible to say how long each auction will take: times vary from a few seconds to many minutes, depending on the unpredictability of the candles. It is extraordinary how much the “burn times” of the candles vary, as each auction candle is usually cut from the same standard candle.
The more bidders we have, the greater the excitement (except when a candle dies after five seconds!), and the more money we raise to help local people – and, occasionally, local good causes – in need of assistance/support.
There will be a cash bar managed, again, as usual, by Julian Turnbull, who always gives generously of his time to help this event, which has taken place every year for nearly 300 years. Don’t miss it!
